Jenny Z., Executive Assistant to the President of an aviation company
I used to work in the United Arab Emirates before I came to Canada. I decided to emigrate and get settled down in Toronto because I knew there were better things this country could provide me with like stability, equal opportunities, social security and overall quality of life. So I applied for immigration and obtained my visa after three-and-a-half years.
When it was time to start looking for a job, I approached an employment agency and attended almost all the job-related workshops for new immigrants. The employment counsellor educated me about WSC-PF and the importance of Canadian experience. When I realized this was very important for me to find a job in Canada. I attended the information session and passed the interview.
Once I became part of the Supply Chain Department at
I received lots of advice on how to write a résumé, cover letter and use social networking to contact different companies within my field of experience. I was given opportunities to attend all kinds of workshops to gain the knowledge relevant to my field and job search tactics. They provided me with lots of helpful feedback and advice on interview tactics, and taught me the importance of following-up on applications. All that helped me regain confidence in my abilities to pursue the job hunt.
Finally, after almost two months of job searching and sending out hundreds of résumés, I landed my current job. I am very thankful for this opportunity as it is in line with what I used to do. It is the kind of job whereby my previous experience comes in handy and I see myself enjoying. I am doing my best to maintain good team spirit with my colleagues as I try to learn more about my company’s culture.
My advice to newcomers, especially to those who are job searching is to “never give up! You never know where and when the next opportunity will come. Don’t lose your self-confidence; find like-minded and positive people to help you achieve your goals.”
Jenny was a Team Leader at WSC-PF Practice Firm’s Supply Chain Department. Now she is working as an Executive Assistant to the President of an aviation company.
