Achilles 2010

Part of the "2010 TEAM WSC!"

"2009 TEAM WSC!"

TEAM WSC! members successfully complete
the 5km Achilles Race on March 14th 2010.
March 17. We did it! Team WSC! participated in a 5 km run / walk called the Achilles St. Patrick’s Day Race. Battling wind and cold, the 10-person team either ran or walked to raise money for WSC. Everyone was thrilled with the gift package, including a bright green Achilles T-Shirt and several small items. To date, the team has raised almost $3,000.
This year’s team members were: Ron Foreman (Treasurer), Bev Moir, Hana Kova and her daughter Dana, Derry Robinson, Ansuya Chetty, Diana Fridlyand, Hugh Hasan, Shamima Adam, and Rafath Ali-Khan. Honey Crossley (Executive Director) and Mandy Thomson (President), although not present on race day, completed the walk independently.
It’s not too late to show your support. You can donate by sending a cheque payable to WSC to the Head Office or donate through canadahelps.org – log on and enter the charity’s name and follow the instructions – your receipt will be issued immediately |

Connect Fulfillment & Mailing Services ("Connect")
|
In November 2009, Connect Fulfillment & Mailing Services (“Connect”) opened as an independent enterprise operated by two immigrant women who were graduates of WSC Programs and had, for the last 10 years, operated WSC Direct Mail. After just a few months, it is evident that Connect will be a success. Located at 100 Sunrise Ave, Suite 131, Connect owners, Vathana Senthilrajh and Mobina Rahman hosted a lunch on February 11, 2010 to re-connect with their former colleagues from Working Skills Centre (WSC). A food basket was presented and a wonderful sharing of stories from the past and new adventures sealed a lasting friendship between the WSC and Connect!
WSC Direct Mail, a social enterprise, closed on October 31, 2009, but the customers are still being served by this new business. This is a great example of how a social purpose enterprise can employ individuals who might not have been ready to launch their own business or become employed immediately but with real work experience have now developed and implemented a learned process and are operating a sustainable business.

A digital storytelling venture, the Riverdale Arts Project is a partnership with Newcomer Women’s Services of Toronto (NEW), made possible through a grant from the Cultural Human Resources Council. During the summer 2008, immigrant women and women over the age of 55 from the Riverdale community have been gathering together to work on a series of short stories, each representing something of significance to them relating to their life in Canada. The women produced stories, art work and photography while learning computer, art and public speaking skills. This has resulted in a series of 2 minute digital stories that will be posted on the both the WSC and the NEW website in October.
